Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide) – Important Information

Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a medication used to support weight loss and help manage type 2 diabetes in specific clinical circumstances. It works by reducing appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer.

                        👉 Please note: Our practice does not routinely prescribe Mounjaro® for weight loss on request.

Who can have Mounjaro® on the NHS?

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends tirzepatide only for selected patients with obesity and related health conditions.

To be eligible (initial NHS rollout), you must:

  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Have a BMI of 40 or above (adjusted for ethnicity)
  • Have four or more of the following diagnosed conditions:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Cardiovascular (heart) disease
    • Obstructive sleep apnoea
    • Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)

Ethnicity adjustment

lower BMI threshold (by 2.5 kg/m²) applies for people from:

  • South Asian
  • Chinese or other Asian backgrounds
  • Middle Eastern
  • Black African or African Caribbean backgrounds

🏥 How treatment is provided

From 23 March 2025, Mounjaro® for weight management is:

  • Prescribed only through specialist weight management services
  • Provided alongside “wraparound care”, including:
    • Dietary advice
    • Behavioural support
    • Input from healthcare professionals (e.g. dietitians, psychologists)

❗ Why isn’t it prescribed on request?

  • There are strict NHS eligibility criteria. Access is limited to patients with the highest clinical need
  • Prescribing is usually done by specialist services, not GPs
  • It requires monitoring for side effects
  • Must be combined with:
    • Diet changes
    • Physical activity
    • Lifestyle support

🚫 Requests to the practice

Please be aware:

  • Requests for Mounjaro® purely for weight loss will usually be declined
  • GPs are unable to prescribe it on request under the NHS
  • We are unable to take over prescribing from private providers
