There have been recent reports of a meningitis outbreak. If you have any concerns about symptoms or vaccination status, it’s important to speak with a qualified healthcare professional for personalised advice.
Vaccines that protect against meningitis
Several routine childhood vaccines offer protection against forms of meningitis, including MenB, DTaP/IPV/Hib/HepB, PCV, MMRV, and MenACWY.
If patients are unsure about their vaccination status
Anyone who is not certain they are up to date with their vaccines should speak with one of the practice nurses, who can review their records and advise on next steps.
Information about the current outbreak
The recent cases are linked to MenB meningococcal disease.
- The MenB vaccine is routinely given at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 1 year of age.
- Babies who missed these doses can receive catch‑up vaccinations up to 2 years of age.
- Practices should not offer MenB vaccination routinely or on request to individuals over 2 years old.
MenACWY vaccination
The MenACWY vaccine is offered in schools during School Year 9 (ages 13–14).
- Young people who missed this immunisation can receive it from their GP practice up to 25 years of age.
